Advanced Project Instructions

[back to tutorial page]

Instructions are much shorter here because I assume you know about PowerPoint and computers. Ask questions if you are unsure.

Introduction:

You can only do three things with any kind of document:

  1. Add to it.
  2. Take away from it.
  3. Change it.

Computer users love to make new vocabulary, so we call this:

  1. Insert
  2. Delete
  3. Modify

You did the first two in the Tomei Tutorial. Let's try changing some things in that file.

Here's what to do:

  1. Go to the PowerPoint folder on your desktop. (Can't find it? Ask Kevin.)
  2. Open Tomei.ppt by double-clicking on it. (this should open the presentation) (Note: You can use your version if you like)

Let's change the format for the presentation.

Go to FORMAT menu | Apply Design

This opens a selection window. Double-click on Presentation Designs to open the folder. THen choose Notebook.pot to change the whole look of your presentation. Click the APPLY button to make it official.

Let's change the behavior

These slides can be introduced and act in many different ways. There are two ways to do this. One is tell PP how to change the slides (called transition). Another is to chage how the words come on the screen. This is called effect.

1. Make sure you are in Slide Sorter View. (Remember that View Bar?) You should see four small squares across the top with slides in them. The highlighted square (the active one) has a dark black border around it.

2. See that No Transition Menu? Click on that small black triangle to the right. Choose a transition from the list. My favorite is Dissolve. See it flake away the black to become your screen? That is a transition. You can see it better in Slide Show view.

3. Try the same thing with No Effect Menu. You can't see the effects until you go to the Slide Show view. Try out one for each different slide. It may start to look like my first one today.

Let's steal a picture from the Internet

Copyright? No worries. This is Fair Use.

  1. Start up Explorer (you have it going already if you are looking at this page on screen, in which case you can got to FILE | New | Window).
  2. In your new window, find a cool picture on the Internet. (Hey you know how to do this)
  3. Use your RIGHT mouse button. Select COPY.
  4. Go back you your PP presentation. Select a slide with some white space (or make a new slide). RIGHT click on the slide. Choose PASTE. Position and resize the picture.

Check out the Advanced File Folder

It has lots of pictures and one extra video. Try to pout those in to the presentaiton. Make new slides for each one!

That's all for now. If you got here, try the tutorial on the web (The one related to the Classroom is best).

Have Fun!
