Thinking with the Computer

A course for learning English, computer skills and thinking styles

Hypertextual Thinking

First, find out what hypertext is by reading these web pages:

The Best site on Hypertext is at the University of Colorado (Denver).

See some interesting hypertext sites like Eastgate, Hypertext Kitchen.

See web usability by Jacob Nielsen.

See what one author thinks is Good Hypertext Writing Style.

See a simple introduction to HTML, one way to write hypertext (the way the web uses).

See a practical way to use hypertext in politics and language (be sure to click on the link to George Bush's speech for a concrete example.)

See a hypertext on the History of the USA. See how the pages are linked.

Read Kevin Ryan's article on the theory of hypertext.

Extra Sites and Ideas:

Using XML to make Semantic Links

Use the WordNet site to explore vocabulary. Click on Use WordNet Online and enter a word with many connections to other words (example: "help")

Look at the software ConceptTutor and think how you could use it. Click on the word "concept" to see an example.

Make a Concept Map.

Find out what Information Architecture is, and how it helps to design web pages that are easy to use.

Look at how Edward Tufte shows people how to display information. Think about how this affects links.

Go to Wikipedia and go to the entry for "bicycle"
