Linda Thalman writes: The best source I know and use about the quality of search engines is THE SEARCH ENGINE UPDATE By Danny Sullivan.

Chin-chi Chao recommends: Searching for the Right Search Engine by Robert Berkman In Chronicle of Higher Education (January, 2000)

Salam Rusli writes: My favourite Search Engine is www.alltheweb.com It is very-very fast, what I can't find from other search engines I can find it here.

Malika Weil recommends: Speaking of search engines, I like to use Profusion. It is actually a meta-search engine. One can choose to use "the fastest 3", "the best 3", "all", or "you choose" and simultaneously put several search engines to work for you. The 9 search engines included are: AltaVista, InfoSeek, LookSmart, Excite, Magellan, WebCrawler, GoTo, AllTheWeb, and Yahoo. One can use simple, Boolean, or phrase searching. I have generally had very good results, and this is the tool we usually recommend to our students.

Carlos Maeztu: If you want a new type of search engine try Oingo. This search engine will actually ask for the meaning of each search term (by using a pull-down menu of synonyms) before it does its search. You can also choose not to use this option. Either way the results are excellent.
